| What
is the weight of images, 1999. Interactive installation (Project). Custom electronic circuits and canvas. |
| The installation
"What is the weight of images?" is constituted by a canvas structure
measuring 3 m by 4 m, fixed on the ceiling and located at the center of
a room. Canvases on both sides cover the structure and inside the
structure is an assemblage of infrared sensors and solenoid actuators.
Infrared sources, concealed in the walls, project the spectator shadow
on the canvas, thus, allowing the sensors to "read" the spectator
contour. Solenoid actuators pull the canvas at the points where sensors
do not find IR radiation. On the other side of the structure, at the
same points, the actuators push the canvas. If two spectators are at
both sides of the structure their salience will be canceled, creating
an area of virtual touch. Up to 300 sensors and actuators will be
assembled like a matrix leading to a screen of pixels, which could be
called pixel/weight. The weighing happens in real time through the
spectator interactions. The spectator weight is also affected by the
others weight leading to a personal/virtual contact. |

The project "What is the weight of images?" sweeps the electromagnetic-gravitational spectrum of the space-spectator. It is pixel/weight connection and disconnection. The spectator is bathe by irradiation, which, by this way, paints the canvas at the 3D space in real time. |
